On Monday, MiKS Hospital inaugurated its facilities in Vitoria-Gasteiz at a ceremony attended by representatives from institutions, the economy, business, healthcare, and sports, along with the hospital's own team of professionals. The opening was presided over by the President of the Basque Government, Imanol Pradales.
Before the official ceremony, the delegation paid an institutional visit to the center, located in Vitoria-Gasteiz (Spain), accompanied by Dr. Mikel Sánchez, who explained the characteristics of the project: a state-of-the-art hospital specializing in comprehensive care for musculoskeletal disorders in pediatric and adult patients, designed to be an international benchmark in arthroscopic surgery and advanced biological therapies.
As Sánchez himself pointed out, one of the main distinguishing features of MiKS Hospital is its specialization and comprehensive approach, backed by a highly qualified team of 140 professionals who place the patient at the center of care.
During his speech, the Basque President highlighted Mikel Sánchez's dual commitment to medical excellence and continuous improvement, as well as to Araba and the Basque Country. In this regard, he pointed out that MiKS Hospital will contribute to enriching the Basque biosciences ecosystem and strengthening the Basque Country's position in the field of regenerative medicine through the development and research of new biological therapies, biomaterials, and surgical techniques aimed at improving people's quality of life.
After more than 30 years of clinical experience, Dr. Sánchez's team has established a first-class center in Vitoria-Gasteiz dedicated exclusively to the treatment of this type of pathology.
he new center has three floors and a total floor space of 4,000 m2, housing healthcare, surgical, research, and rehabilitation services equipped with advanced technology. Its infrastructure includes a Diagnostic Imaging area equipped with state-of-the-art 3 Tesla MRI machines, CT scanners, and conventional radiology equipment, which, according to the medical team, allows for high diagnostic accuracy through advanced clinical protocols; the biological therapy research laboratory, aimed at transferring advances in basic science to clinical practice within the framework of translational research; and a state-of-the-art surgical unit that includes Mako robotic surgery, the first in the Basque Country, for hip and knee replacement, allowing for more precise, less invasive procedures and faster recovery. In addition, the hospital functions as a specialized training center and international meeting point for professionals training in innovative surgical techniques and biological therapies.
Specialized Units
The hospital's healthcare activities are organized into specialized units covering all musculoskeletal disorders, with specific areas for the hip and knee, shoulder and elbow, hand, foot, and ankle, and an Advanced Physiotherapy Unit for both surgical patients and anyone requiring rehabilitation treatment.
Among the units, the Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery Unit stands out, dedicated to the treatment of congenital and acquired pathologies in children. It is a European leader in the application of advanced surgical solutions adapted to child growth and the transition to adulthood through innovative and scientifically proven techniques. Within this unit, the hospital develops a specific line of action in achondroplasia and participates in all international clinical trials currently underway, offering pediatric patients and their families continuous support with comprehensive clinical follow-up.
The Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery Unit is a European leader in the application of advanced surgical solutions for complex pathologies in children.
The hospital also has a specialized unit for the treatment of chronic pain, where the latest advances in biological therapies are applied to treat this type of pathology, as well as an Internal Medicine Unit and its own Clinical Analysis Laboratory.
The surgical block incorporates state-of-the-art technology, including robotic surgery applied to the treatment of osteoarthritis. In this context, the Mako intelligent robotic system allows each procedure to be planned in a personalized way, adapted to the anatomy of each patient, optimizing the placement of prostheses, reducing surgical risk, and promoting faster recovery.
The hospital has the Mako intelligent robotic arm, the first in the Basque Country, for hip and knee replacement surgery.
According to Dr. Sánchez, this technology enables more precise and less invasive surgery, with less risk and faster recovery, as well as optimizing the placement of prostheses and increasing their durability.
From the outset, when arthroscopic surgery was still rare in Europe, Dr. Sánchez's team did not just adopt it: they promoted it, perfected it, and led the development of new techniques, even developing their own surgical instruments. That same vision made them pioneers in the application of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) in traumatology, opening up new avenues in biological therapies for tissue regeneration that are now an international benchmark.
This innovative mindset is also reflected in the creation of personalized surgical guides for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and the use of 3D printing to manufacture bone replicas and customized plates for each patient, innovations patented in Europe and the United States. Thirty years later, this philosophy remains the hospital's DNA, reflected in the inclusion of Dr. Mikel Sánchez in Stanford's ‘World's Top 2% Scientists’, in the more than 10,000 international citations of his R&D group, and in his appointment as a Full Member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of the Basque Country (RAMPV), milestones that attest to his excellence and global leadership in musculoskeletal medicine.
With its official opening, Hospital MiKS consolidates the track record and experience accumulated by Dr. Sánchez and his team in the Basque Country, offering patients comprehensive care backed by a team internationally recognized for its pioneering contributions in arthroscopic surgery, biological therapies, and innovative surgical techniques, and positioning Vitoria-Gasteiz as a world leader in the treatment of musculoskeletal pathologies.
