Diego Delgado, Maider Beitia, Ane Garate and Pello Sánchez (all of them being researchers from the Arthroscopic Surgery Unit of Dr. Mikel Sánchez), together with the Neuroscience and Pharmacology departments of the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Achucarro Basque Center for Neuroscience (University of the Basque Country) have published a research work in which they demonstrate the anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory and stabilizing action that Platelet-Rich Plasma has in different cell populations of the central nervous system.
In this study, it was observed that treatment with Platelet Rich Plasma increased the survival of neural progenitor cells, stabilized synaptic connections between neurons and had a potent anti-inflammatory action on the microglia subjected to pro-inflammatory stimuli. In addition, these effects were stronger when applying Platelet Rich Plasma obtained from young patients, compared to plasma obtained from elderly donors, due to level variation of different molecules.
The results obtained in this work open the door to future research on the application of Platelet Rich Plasma as a therapeutic tool to treat pathologies of the Central Nervous System.
