Drs. Mikel Sánchez and Mikel Vicente took part yesterday in the 11th Scientific Conference on Medical Imaging organized by the Royal National Academy of Medicine of Spain (RANME), which this year focused on disruptive technology and clinical innovation applied to musculoskeletal imaging.
The evolution of musculoskeletal medicine does not depend solely on new therapeutic options. It also depends on our ability to obtain increasingly precise information about tissues and the processes taking place within them. In this context, medical imaging is expanding its capabilities and playing an increasingly important role in clinical practice.
This evolution was the focus of the 11th Scientific Conference on Medical Imaging held yesterday at the RANME, which brought together specialists from clinical and academic fields. The conference was sponsored by Philips and coordinated by Prof. Luis Martí-Bonmatí, Full Member of the Academy in Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging, and Prof. José Luis Carreras Delgado, Full Member of the Academy in Nuclear Medicine.
Two perspectives from Hospital MiKS
Hospital MiKS was represented by two of its specialists, whose presentations addressed two different but closely related areas within musculoskeletal medicine.
Dr. Mikel Sánchez presented a talk on the transition from mechanics to biology in orthopedic surgery, exploring how a better understanding of biological processes is changing the way certain musculoskeletal conditions are understood and treated.
Dr. Mikel Vicente, meanwhile, focused his presentation on the role of high-precision magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis and follow-up of trauma patients, examining the possibilities offered by new imaging tools to obtain more detailed information about tissues.
Two approaches that reflect the same underlying idea: advancing our understanding of musculoskeletal conditions requires combining clinical expertise with new ways of obtaining, interpreting, and applying information.
From anatomical imaging to a more comprehensive picture
Medical imaging has evolved considerably over recent decades. Anatomical imaging has been complemented by techniques capable of providing additional information about the characteristics and behavior of tissues.
In musculoskeletal medicine, this evolution makes it possible to examine structures such as muscles, tendons, cartilage, ligaments, and joints in greater detail, providing information that can be relevant not only for diagnosis, but also for treatment planning and patient follow-up.
3-tesla magnetic resonance imaging is among the technologies helping to advance this field, thanks to its ability to produce high-resolution images and incorporate advanced acquisition and processing techniques.
The goal is not simply to obtain more images, but to provide higher-quality information that can help clinicians better understand each individual clinical situation.
A collaboration focused on innovation
This technological evolution is also part of the collaboration between Hospital MiKS and Philips. In 2025, the two organizations signed a strategic agreement to promote innovation in the diagnosis of musculoskeletal conditions, as well as initiatives related to education, innovation, research, and the development of new imaging solutions.
The agreement forms part of Hospital MiKS's strategy of incorporating knowledge and technology that can contribute to improving care for people with musculoskeletal conditions.
Within this framework, the Hospital MiKS Diagnostic Imaging Department uses Philips technology for conventional radiography, computed tomography (CT), and 3-tesla magnetic resonance imaging, providing healthcare professionals with advanced tools for the assessment of musculoskeletal conditions.
In addition to high-resolution anatomical imaging, magnetic resonance imaging can incorporate advanced techniques that provide complementary information and enable more detailed tissue characterization.
Knowledge, technology, and clinical practice
Hospital MiKS's participation in the RANME conference provided an opportunity to share knowledge and bring the clinical experience developed in the field of musculoskeletal disorders to the scientific community.
It also highlights one of the principles underpinning the Hospital MiKS model: connecting medical knowledge, research, and technological innovation to bring advances that can add value to clinical practice and patient care.
Because advancing medical imaging is not simply about seeing more, but about obtaining better information to understand, make decisions, and monitor each patient's progress.
