New PRP classification and coding system

Dr. Mikel Sánchez and Dr. Diego Delgado from the Arthroscopic Surgery Unit of Dr. Mikel Sánchez (UCA, according to the Spanish acronym), together with 13 specialists of international renown in regenerative medicine, have developed a new coding system for Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP). This classification seeks to be a worldwide reference for specialists, research groups, scientific journals, medical and scientific societies and regulatory agencies working in the field of PRP and regenerative medicine.

In the current literature, studies on the use of PRP in similar clinical settings sometimes result in contradictory results. One of the main reasons is that the "PRP" term encompasses various products that have different characteristics and composition, and therefore they produce different effects. With this new classification, it is possible to standardize and create a unique worldwide reference system in the use of PRP, taking into account common obtention, composition and application scientific criteria.

In this paper, which also included a systematic review of meta-analyses evaluating the use of PRP in knee osteoarthritis, a new classification system and a reference guide were designed for the correct information to be included in PRP studies. PRP is a treatment that requires precise reports on the characteristics of the product, its preparation and application methods. This new common approach improves the research and scientific quality of PRP studies, thus enabling the development of more effective clinical protocols for the patient.
