Regenerative medicine is no longer a promise for the future, but a present-day reality in modern traumatology. At Hospital MiKS, we have been applying biological solutions for decades to improve the quality of life of our patients.
Today, we take a closer look at one of the most effective treatments for knee osteoarthritis: platelet-rich plasma (PRP).
Unlike synthetic drugs, PRP is a biological therapy that uses the patient’s own resources. The process is simple yet highly sophisticated: a small blood sample is drawn from the patient and processed to isolate plasma rich in platelets. These platelets contain proteins known as growth factors.
These proteins act as “messengers,” sending precise signals to the knee to stimulate its own natural repair and recovery processes.
What sets our approach apart is not only the “what,” but also the “how.” This treatment is coordinated through our Advanced Biological Therapy Unit (ABTU), where we are pioneers in the clinical application of PRP in orthopaedics.
When growth factors are injected into an osteoarthritic knee, two key effects are triggered:
“Plasma is equivalent to combining a corticosteroid with hyaluronic acid, but in a much more natural and long-lasting way,” explains Dr. Azofra, orthopedic surgeon at Hospital MiKS.
Although its effect develops more slowly than traditional injections, its main advantage is longer-lasting results.
At Hospital MiKS, we are not newcomers to this field. We were pioneers at the beginning of this century in the use of platelet-rich plasma in traumatology and sports medicine. This accumulated experience within our Advanced Biological Therapy Unit (ABTU) allows us to report high levels of effectiveness.
One of the most common questions in clinical practice is: if it worked for my neighbour, will it work for me? The answer lies in what Dr. Azofra calls our “protein cocktail.”
“Plasma is a combination of proteins, and each of us has our own cocktail. It is like an ID card; each one is unique,” explains the doctor.
The effectiveness of the treatment depends on several key factors:
PRP is not magic—it is biology applied with medical rigor. It represents a powerful tool that allows us to treat knee pain and dysfunction from within, using the patient’s own cells to promote joint repair and lubrication.
In the following video, Dr. Juan Azofra explains how this biological system is transforming the treatment of osteoarthritis.
